Hi Guillermo Ferna, Culture matters in everything, from how you dress to what you eat and how a mother gives birth to her children. Tell the Guatemalan Government to provide culturally appropriate maternal health care » In Guatemala, indigenous women are three times as likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than non-indigenous women. The country has taken some steps to try to fix this tragic statistic, but more efforts must be made to understand these women and their culture. To really address disparities in maternal health, the Guatemalan government must actually collect data that can be broken down by ethnicity and language to figure out how they can provide better care. Moreover, they must support traditional Mayan birth methods and make sure doctors, nurses and midwives have the appropriate training.
