Dear Youton,

One thing to remember about teacher training is that research
indicates that people teach using models of good teaching that they
have experienced as learners rather than what they have learned in
teacher education. Research also indicates that many teachers are
highly critical of their teacher education experience which they claim
failed to prepared them adequately to teach. This is not to suggest
that teacher education is useless. Teaching is not a profession in
most countries or jurisdictions. If teaching is to become a profession
like lawyers and doctors etc., then teacher education will be
absolutely necessary.

I and others started teaching in a training centre without any form of
teacher education or training. We were assigned to work with expert
instructors in our specialty area to learn to teach in TVET just like
apprentices learn their trade. We were released one a week to attend
formal teacher training. And looking back at that experience several
years later, and considering the evolution in TVET teacher education,
I still believe that apprenticeship teacher training model is still
the most efficient and effective. However, later on when I went to
attend a formal teacher education institution, they systematically
refused to give me credits for my apprenticeship training in the
teaching of TVET.

If the weekly teacher training format cannot be implemented, you could
consider a front-end training to give the beginning teachers the
essential knowledge and skills about good teaching. My message to you
is that you should be afraid to look at other informal avenues to
train your TVET teachers.

Best regards
Chris
