Subject: RE: Improving participation of girls in TVET

Dear colleagues,

There are summaries of a number of articles/papers on gender and career
aspirations on our website - www.educationandemployers.org - which might be
of interest to members.  A theme through the papers is the significant
influence that real-world exposure to the workplace whilst in full-time
education has in shaping and enabling progression towards careers
aspirations.  School-mediated work experience (at 14-16) is seen as an
especially useful means of challenging gendered stereotypes about the
suitability of different occupations.  However, in the UK, work experience
is under-utilised - in part because of a culture of young people
self-sourcing placements in line with preceding conceptions of vocational
appropriateness.  It suggests that shorter periods of workplace exposure
earlier in school careers, providing insight into the range of vocational
pathways and occupations.  Research I've seen indicates that girls are
especially attentive to women speaking about their careers as they provide
prima facae evidence that women do prosper in what are considered to be
male occupational preserves.
