Good Day, Susan!

Thanks for the  link to the Hole in the Wall project
http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/index.html .  I had not heard of this idea
before. It is similar to the Community Access Point (CAP) idea that was
being promoted in Alberta about 1998, where computers were made accessible
to the public in Libraries and other public buildings, although it is
clearly a step removed in the physical environment.

The Hole in the Wall replaces the Teacher with a Computer, and the
playground is the natural meeting place for social activity.  No need to
build or staff a public building, and no restriction on access.
Brilliant.

I find this a particularly intriguing idea, with the emphasis on the
Culture of Childhood and the transmission of learning that occurs naturally
there.  I believe that our K-12 School system with discrete age/grade
classes has been a big step backward in this regard.  The one-room school
house with one teacher serving children of all ages in a single group
encourages the transmission of vocabulary and meanings and "common
knowledge," and appropriate social behaviors.

What is the range of vocabulary of the average young adult in a given
community with a Hole in the Wall or CAP?  How does this relate to
employment and income and community development, compared to a similar
community which does not have this?  Does the Hole in the Wall (or CAP)
foster this as well as or better than One Laptop for Every Child?  What is
the relative cost and benefit relationships?  How does this compare with a
Dictionary, Maths Handbook, and and Atlas in every household?

Here is an example of vocabulary development noted on playgrounds:

Online Dictionary of Playground Slang (ODPS)
http://www.odps.org/glossword/index.php

I suspect this is one dictionary the kids would pore over with intense
interest, whether in print or on a computer.

Spring is arriving  slowly here.  The snow is just starting to melt down.

Yours,

Damian
