I agree with Susan that we should treat the classroom as a workplace and
that means for teachers too. If we want students to learn some of those
employability skills such as punctuality, following safe work procedures,
keeping a clean work space and working as a team, the instructors have to
model those behaviours. It is shocking how many classrooms I have gone into
that do not meet these standards.

When I was teaching in the trades, I made it clear to my students what the
expectations were around employability and technical skills. They knew I
was serious because I outlined the expectations and had a rubric that was
used for self-, peer-, and teacher assessment. The student would self-check
on a weekly basis, they would have to get two peers to assess them over the
course of the term and at the end of the term, the student and I would
compare my rubric to theirs. I reviewed each student's rubric to determine
select the "Student of the Month." This came with some perks like free hair
and nail services. The rubric worked very well because I also told the
students that when they graduate and need a reference, I would use the
accumulated rubrics to provide (or not) a reference letter. Their
continuous work on their employability skills throughout their program
served to re-enforce their learning.
best,
sandra
