Dear Sandra,
>Students quickly learn as they advance in schools that TVE is for those
students who are not academically capable. Unfortunately the structure of
schools support those beliefs. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, we
should take a few lessons from early childhood education and apply that
same model in all schooling.<
Dear Sandra and all,
What you are stating relates exactly to the present state of schools all
over the world and it will, indeed, take a lot of re- thinking to change a
situation, which leaves many young people behind. There are, however
conceptions and practical examples for integrating technical subjects at an
early stage. For instance schools based on the pedagogy of the
Brazilian educator Paolo Freire,
http://paulofreireschool.org/
of the Italian educator and medical doctor Maria Montessori
http://www.mariamontessorischools.co.uk/
and of Rudolph Steiner
http://www.steiner.edu/
Howard Gardner
http://pzweb.harvard.edu/
All of these approaches start early with integrated subjects and allow
young children to discover many aspects of the world. Several schools
worldwide have used Paolo Freires' concept and philosophy as he has
described earlier in: "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" . Today schools in
The US, in the Netherlands, and in several developing countries apply his
approach and have added new ideas to it. The same with Montessori
Kindergardens and schools, and with schools based on the pedagogy of Rudolf
Steiner.
Several, if not most university studies are also TVET – just on a
different level and with different contents. University students'
education also directs towards nothing else but to the labour market and to
take up employment.
Greetings
Helga
