I fully agree with you that environmental challenges should be a mega
trend for TVET of the future. I am currently working on a research project
with the food and beverage sector and we found that estimates indicate that
80% of the $10 billion annual expenditure on energy in the commercial food
service sector is wasted. Estimates also suggest that restaurants can
achieve a 10 to 30 percent reduction in utility costs without sacrificing
services (IFMA Foundation, 2009). Saving on energy cost can significantly
increase profit margin (National Ski Areas Association, 2002). Energy
preservation and the prevention of food waste and food loss is among the
ripest "low-hanging fruits" that can help the food and beverage service
sector to reduce demand for fossil fuels and emissions of greenhouse
gases.

What are the implications of this trend for TVET? Answer to these
questions will enable us to develop the Vision 2020: TVET of the Future.
