Dear friends, Over the past two weeks, I've been focusing the conversation on our cause around the devastating problem of homelessness in America - and specifically, the plight of women and children experiencing homelessness. Raising awareness for a problem is one thing, but our group is about ending poverty in America - not just talking about it. That's why I'm so excited about the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) in San Francisco, led by Martha Ryan. Over the past 12 months, HPP served more than 3,700 adults caring for 5,220 children (approximately 3,000 families); more than 5% of all San Francisco families and nearly 60% of the families in the city that fall below the poverty line, according to the United States Census Bureau. An average of 160 new families come to HPP each month for an array of services, including the Wellness Center Program. The Wellness Center provides prenatal and parenting classes, support groups, doula (birth coach) support, alternative health services (e.g., massage, yoga, acupuncture). Since 1992, nearly 2,200 babies were born to HPP clients. Of those, 90.1% were born at a normal weight and 95.6% were born drug free. I'l be sharing more about this amazing organization - and the solutions HPP provides - throughout the rest of this month.
