Subject: Duty of Care by Instructors / Mutual Aid & Support Groups
Good Day, Every One!
Part of my practice as an Adult Educator involves the care of the
individual learners on the basis of their particular needs. When these
needs are supported they are better able to maintain their focus on
learning. When these needs are not supported they do poorly with their
skills development or drop out of the program.
Teachers of children have a legal duty of care which requires that they
act in the place of parents (in loco parentis). Instructors of adults have
a somewhat different legal relationship, but may still be understood to owe
a duty of care because of their position. In the case of adult learners
the Instructor's relationship may be more akin to that of an uncle or
aunt, or an elder sibling or cousin, or as a mentor with a protégé.
The amount of time spent on dealing with the concerns of life beyond the
content of the program is relatively small. The value of the time spent in
terms of benefit to the learner is much greater in proportion. I believe
that those learners who have benefitted from this kind of interaction would
sometimes rate it as being worth half of everything that they got out of a
program.
The same concerns exist in the workplace. Again there is a different
legal relationship, but again there is a duty of care that those in
leadership positions also become tacitly responsible for.
The rewards for providing assistance when it is required are loyalty and
devoted efforts to please. There is no better ally in your endeavours than
those you have helped in this way.
Below are links to resources that may be useful for sharing with those who
have a need for assistance with an aspect of their life that might
otherwise prevent them for succeeding in their program or on the job.
